What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, around the joints and
other organs in the body. It is a chronic disease mainly characterized by inflammation of the lining, or synovium, of the
joints. It can lead to long-term joint damage, resulting in chronic pain, loss of function and disability. The joint
inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling, pain, stiffness, and redness in the joints. The inflammation of
rheumatoid disease can also occur in tissues around the joints, such as the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. In
some people with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation leads to the destruction of the cartilage, bone, and
ligaments, causing deformity of the joints.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include:
• Joint pain
• Joint swelling
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Muscle aches
• Weakness
Causes
This Autoimmune disease occurs when the body's tissues mistakenly are attacked by their own immune system. The
immune system attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes that surround the joints. The body's immune
system normally attacks foreign substances, like viruses or bacteria, but in this autoimmune disease, the immune
system confuses healthy tissue for foreign substances, as a result, the body attacks itself affecting the joints, wrists,
fingers, knees, feet, and ankles. The course and the severity of the illness can vary considerably. The cause of
rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, however infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi have long been
suspected to cause the disease.
It is believed that the tendency to develop rheumatoid arthritis may be genetically inherited. Environmental factors also
seem to play some role in causing rheumatoid arthritis. For example, scientists have reported that smoking tobacco
increases the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
Western Medicine treatment
The goal of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis is to reduce joint inflammation, pain, deformity, maximize joint function,
and prevent joint destruction. Rheumatoid arthritis usually requires lifelong treatment, including:
• Anti-inflammatory medications
• Analgesic Drugs
• Physical Therapy
• Surgery
