What is Postnasal drip?
Postnasal drip is a condition in which the sinuses produce excessive amounts of mucus. This excessive mucus
accumulates in the back of the nose and drips into the throat. Postnasal drip is a symptom of a variety of conditions and
diseases. Conditions and diseases that commonly cause postnasal drip include allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Other
causes of postnasal drip include non-allergic rhinitis, pregnancy, taking birth-control pills, laryngopharyngeal acid
reflux, and esophageal motility disorders.

Symptoms
Symptoms of postnasal drip can vary in intensity, frequency, and duration among individuals. Symptoms can be
minimal and include:
•        Mild congestion of the nose or sinuses, a feeling of mucus or tickling in the back of the throat, clearing the throat,
and a frequent need to spit.
•        Sore throat, coughing or snorting to clear the throat
•        Difficulty breathing
•        Nausea
•        Vomiting due to accumulation of mucus in the stomach.
•        Complications of postnasal drip include the development of bad breath, chronic sore throat, chronic cough, and
the development of masses on the tonsils.
•        Symptoms that can accompany postnasal drip due to allergic rhinitis include itching, sneezing, impaired smell
and taste, headache, a plugged feeling in ears, under-eye puffiness, fatigue, and a spacey "head-in-the-clouds"
     feeling.
•        Symptoms that can accompany postnasal drip due to sinusitis include fever, headache, stuffy nose, and difficulty
breathing. Pain or pressure in the face or area in and around the eyes is common. There also can be fatigue and
swelling around the nose and eyes and eyelids. Pain and headache may be worse when bending over or lying
     down.

Western Medicine Treatment
Treatment for this condition depends on the cause.
•        If the cause is allergies it is treated with antihistamines and decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, and other forms
     of steroids.
•        If the cause is bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics, but chronic sinus infections may require surgery
     to open the blocked sinuses.
•        Laryngopharyngeal acid reflux is treated with antacids and drugs that block acid production in stomach.
•        If the reason cannot be diagnosed, then medications are aimed at thinning of mucus and some measures are
taken to allow its free flow. These steps include drinking more fluids, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, etc.
