Chronic Bronchitis
What Is Chronic Bronchitis?[1]
"Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the bronchi (medium-size airways) in the lungs. It
is generally considered one of the two forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (
COPD). It
is defined clinically as a persistent cough that produces sputum (phlegm) and mucus, for at least
three months in two consecutive years.

Bronchitis may be indicated by an expectorating cough (also known as a productive cough, i.e.
one that produces sputum), shortness of breath (dyspnea) and wheezing. Occasionally chest
pains, fever, and fatigue or malaise may also occur. Mucus is often green or yellowish green and
also may be orange or pink, depending on the pathogen causing the inflammation.

Tobacco smoking is the most common cause. Pneumoconiosis and long-term fume inhalation are
other causes."

Overview[2]
"Chronic bronchitis is often associated with other pulmonary diseases such as:
  • Pulmonary emphysema
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Asthma
  • Tuberculosis
  • Sinusitis
  • Upper respiratory infections."

Chronic bronchitis may cause:
  • Frequent and severe respiratory infections
  • Narrowing and plugging of the breathing tubes (bronchi)
  • Difficult breathing
  • Disability

Outlook[1]
Treatment for Chronic Bronchitis includes:
  • Antibiotics: For acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, if antibiotics are used, amoxicillin
    or doxycycline is recommended.
  • Bronchodilators: For acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, a clinical practice guideline
by the American College of Physicians found that bronchodilators may help. Ipratropium is
an example of a bronchodilator that may be useful for people suffering from chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease, such as chronic bronchitis.
  • Corticosteroids: For acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, a clinical practice guideline
by the American College of Physicians found that corticosteroids may help.[4]
  • Smoking cessation.

Alternative Medicine[3]
"In Western culture, the term alternative medicine refers to any healing practice "that does not
fall within the realm of conventional medicine"."
